Hong Kong based PCCW Global has announced the Hong Kong landing of the new 25,000km Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) subsea cable.

PCCW Global, the international division of HKT, said the cable has landed at D'Aguilar Cable Station and will soon be extended to PCCW Global’s city data switching exchange center.

The AAE-1 cable uses the latest 100Gbps technology to deliver a design capacity of over 40Tbps. Once complete, the cable will span 25,000km to connect Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Italy and France.

The cable is designed to transit through Thailand to avoid the heavily congested Malacca Strait route, adding new diversity for cables in the region while reducing latency.

Services over the in-development AAE-1 cable commenced late last month.

“As AAE-1 follows a route similar to the ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’, it will thus further support China’s ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative for all forms of high-speed data services and content applications,” PCCW Global CEO Marc Halbfinger said.
