2degrees expands LTE network to second city

New Zealand mobile operator 2degrees has extended its 4G footprint to Wellington, after finally launching services earlier this year.

The operator is now providing 150Mbps LTE to more than half of the city, which is New Zealand's capital, 2degrees said.

2degrees, the smallest of New Zealand's three mobile operators, launched LTE in New Zealand's largest city Auckland in June.

The network now also covers two thirds of this city, and 2degrees aims to expand it to three quarters by the end of the month.

The company also plans to launch services in the cities of Christchurch and Hamilton in late September and early October respectively.

2degrees was late to the LTE party – rival Vodafone New Zealand launched 4G services in March 2013 and Telecom New Zealand went live that November.

But 2degrees CTO Mike Davies said waiting has given the operator an easier time with its rollout, which is now well ahead of schedule.

“We have a unique advantage of having the latest network technology, thus the addition of 4G is relatively straightforward. The first stage of our rollout is on track to being achieved well within the timeframes we set and we are now planning the rollout to other regions in the coming year,” he said.
