Pep Guardiola's side took the lead in the early minutes of the first half, with Phil Foden benefiting from a Sporting mistake. However, Sporting made an incredible comeback, with Viktor Gyokeres showcasing his class in front of goal with a hat-trick and Maximiliano Araujo scoring directly from the second half kick-off.

The Champions League evening began with Sporting fans and players celebrating and showing their appreciation for Amorim for a four-year spell in which he delivered two domestic titles. Before the game, Amorim said he would "understand" if Sporting fans would be angry at his bombshell exit.

The victory gives the young Portuguese manager a magical night at home by leading his current club, Sporting Lisbon, to an unbeaten run in all competitions this season. The young manager will leave the club sitting at the top of the Liga Portugal standings with 30 points, while they have also qualified to the semifinals of their league cup and are in second place in the Champions League standings.

Ahead of his final home game in charge of Sporting, in his press conference, Amorim insists that United fans “will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived” if his team Sporting Lisbon is able to beat Manchester City.
