Ragnar Oratmangoen, currently playing for FCV Dender in the Belgian Pro League, shared the story of his journey to joining Indonesia’s national football team. In an interview with Telecom Asia Sport, Ragnar revealed that when the opportunity to represent the country of his parents' birth came, he did not hesitate.

The process began with several calls from PSSI officials, but it was Jay Idzes, the captain of Indonesia's national team who plays for Venezia in Serie A, that ultimately convinced him.

At first, I received calls from PSSI representatives, but when Jay reached out directly, I immediately agreed without hesitation. Honestly, even if they (PSSI) had approached me three years ago, I would have said yes immediately.

The naturalization process went smoothly, and for Ragnar, who has Maluku heritage through his father, wearing the Indonesian jersey was a moment of immense pride. "It’s an honor and something truly special for me."

Ragnar recalled his first encounter with the team, which took place not at a training session, but at a team dinner.

I joined during dinner, not at training. I greeted coach Shin Tae-yong first—I was nervous, but he turned out to be very friendly. Then I got to know the rest of the team.

Although he was familiar with Indonesian players based in Europe, Ragnar admitted that the local players were new to him. "At first, I didn’t know who they were. But now, I know everyone."

Ragnar’s football journey began at the NEC Nijmegen youth academy, where he played from the age of 9 until 18. He started his professional career in 2017 with TOP Oss, a second-division club in the Netherlands. After stints at Cambuur, Go Ahead Eagles, Groningen, and Fortuna Sittard, Ragnar eventually moved to FCV Dender in Belgium.

Despite building his career in Europe, Ragnar kept in touch with Indonesian football.

Once I knew I would play for Indonesia, I started watching their matches, including games at the Asian Cup.

Playing for Indonesia was also a deeply personal moment for Ragnar’s family, especially his father, who was born in Maluku.

I know a lot about Indonesia and Maluku, the place where my father was born. I often gather with extended family who come from the same village. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to visit Tanimbar, Maluku yet.

He described the pride his family felt during his debut at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK).

My family was so happy. When they experienced the incredible atmosphere at GBK and saw the fans, they couldn’t believe it. It was an unforgettable moment for all of us.
