The Absa Cape Epic, renowned for its tough terrain and endurance demands, marked its 21st edition this year and is globally recognized as one of the most challenging mountain biking races.

On Sunday, March 23, Rachel, accompanied by her two children, visited the Lourensford Wine Estate to support riders completing the eight-day race through rugged and scenic landscapes. The event is known for testing athletes’ limits, and Rachel was deeply inspired by the final stages of this event and shared her admiration for the competitors during an exclusive interview.

We are really privileged as the Kolisi Foundation to be one of the social impact partners of the Absa Cape Epic this year. It’s been such a phenomenal experience to witness what these riders go through to be successful and finish the race. I’ve been particularly inspired by the women riders. I’m in awe of their achievements and I’m planning to take on the challenge next year.

Rachel Kolisi

Rachel spoke about the resilience displayed by all participants.

There are so many phenomenal women and men participating this year. Their individual stories, what they’ve had to overcome, and the resilience required to complete this extraordinary event has been incredible. It’s such an honour to be here as part of the whole experience.

Having supported Siya Kolisi during South Africa’s Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, Rachel is no stranger to high-profile sports events. Reflecting on the growing diversity in South African sports, she praised the increasing participation of women in various athletic fields.

As South Africans, we have such diverse opportunities to participate in so many different sports. Women are stepping up in so many sporting codes now. Getting a seat at the table is so important, and it’s amazing to see how women are making strides in cycling too.

The Absa Cape Epic significantly contributes to the local economy. The 2025 race, held from March 16 to 23, injected over R560 million into the Western Cape region, supporting tourism, job creation, and small business growth.

Clinton Clarke, Managing Executive of SA Coastal Regions for Absa, lauded the event for its economic impact.

As title sponsor, we are proud to continue driving investment through the Absa Cape Epic. This world-class event remains a powerful catalyst for the economy, supporting job creation and boosting tourism.

Clarke also expressed confidence that the 2025 race made an even greater economic contribution locally and globally.

Absa is also championing inclusivity in cycling through its #SheUntamed initiative, which empowers women and young girls in sports. Launched in 2019, the program aims to increase female participation in cycling. This year, twelve all-women teams competed in the 2025 Absa Cape Epic.
