The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder was allegedly detained in the early hours of September 8 at La Riviera, a popular Spanish nightclub, and was taken to a police station for questioning. The Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo reported the arrest took place at around 5.30 am.

The incident happened when Nunes was spending the weekend with his friends in the Spanish capital after failing to establish himself as a regular starting player under Pep Guardiola's midfield. It was reported Nunes was accused of taking the phone from a 58-year-old man who had tried to take a photo of him without permission in the nightclub toilets.

The Portuguese international allegedly became angry as a result, snatched the device of the 58-year-old man, and refused to return it. The man notified the police immediately, and during the police investigation later, the found phone was in the Manchester City star's possession in his room.

The former Wolves player was reportedly handcuffed at the nightspot before being taken to a National Police station in the Madrid neighborhood of Arganzuela. He was released hours later, following the intervention of a lawyer.

A spokesman for the National Police in Madrid confirmed the arrest;

'I can confirm a Portuguese national was arrested in the early hours of September 8 at a Madrid nightclub on suspicion of stealing another person’s mobile phone.'

A spokesman for the National Police in Madrid said

Nunes will continue to face trial over the incident, but he will continue to be in selection for Manchester City pending the ongoing investigation. The Portuguese international was named in the starting lineup of City's Tuesday night Champions League 4-0 win against Slovan Bratislava. Manchester City's next game will see the Citizens take on Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.
