A 51-year-old Irish Liverpool supporter has tragically died after he was reported to be hit by a car in Milan ahead of Liverpool’s first Champions League match against AC Milan at the San Siro Stadium.
The Irish fan was reported to have flown in from Manchester and arrived in Italy some hours before the tragic incident. Reports from Italian outlets Il Corriere della Sera and La Gazzetta dello Sport claim the fan, 51, was struck by an SUV at 1 am while attempting to cross the A4 highway near the Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo. It was further reported that they found his passport in his pocket as well as a ticket for the AC Milan vs. Liverpool match.
The reason for the man crossing the road is unclear at this stage. However, the NH Hotel directly across the A4 has prompted speculation that he may have been planning to stay the night there before traveling to the San Siro.
The reports further claim that the victim is said to have been crossing the road with another two supporters, a father and son, but they were unharmed. Before the police arrived at the scene where the fan was fatally struck, both supporters had left.
The incident is being investigated by the local police to determine if the fan was 'in an altered psychophysical state that may have influenced his actions'. The tragic news came some hours before Liverpool’s game against AC Milan, but the match is still expected to go ahead as scheduled today with kick-off around 20:00 WAT.
