Newly promoted Leicester City have won an appeal against a decision that could have seen the Foxes have some points deduction for an alleged breach of Premier League Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules.

An independent panel determined that the Premier League did not have the authority to penalize the club. Skysports reports that the original Premier League case claimed that Leicester had incurred a loss of £129.4m over three seasons leading up to the 2022/2023 season, which exceeded the permitted £105m losses over that period by £24.4m. However, the Foxes remained adamant that they did not breach the PSR in the first place.

The independent appeals board has now overturned that decision, claiming that the club was relegated to the Championship at the end of that season and the Premier League could only predict that Leicester were in breach of PSR. The Foxes will no longer face the threat of a points deduction.

"Leicester City has won its appeal against a decision that an independent commission had jurisdiction to consider an alleged breach by the club of Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).

A statement on Leicester's website said:

The Premier League said they were surprised and disappointed by the decision announced on Tuesday.

"The Appeal Board's decision effectively means that, despite the club being a member of the League from Seasons 2019/20 to 2022/23, the League cannot take action against the club for exceeding the relevant PSR threshold in respect of the associated accounting periods," the Premier League said in a statement.

Nottingham Forest and Everton both received point deductions last season after being found to have breached PSR rules.
