Barnabas Varga went down in the second half after an apparent clash with Scotland's goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, following a free kick. Hungary's players immediately called for him to receive medical attention. The game was stopped for several minutes, with the Hungary team forming a shield around Varga while he received treatment and TV cameras panned away. The Hungary forward was stretchered out of the stadium with screens protecting him.

The Hungarian FA subsequently confirmed the forward had been rushed to the hospital, where he remained in stable condition, in a statement released

"Barnabas Varga's condition is stable. The Ferencvaros player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news about his status."
