English Premier League 2024/2025 Relegation Prediction: Leicester City and Other New Boys in the Race For Survival

The 2024/2025 season will kick off this month, and bookmakers have already dropped odds for clubs they think will get relegated. Like last season, when Sheffield United, Burnley, and Luton Town got relegated the same season they gained promotion, the three clubs from the Championship are all lined up as potential teams to be relegated at the end of this season. Below are analyses of these clubs and predictions on clubs that will relegate or survive.

Since the end of last season, Leicester City have parted ways with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Kelechi Iheanacho, Dennis Praet, and Marc Albrighton. They have added Issahaku Fatawu to their squad from Sporting CP for a fee reported to be around €17.00 million. They have also signed Caleb Okoli from Atalanta BC, Michael Golding from Chelsea FC U21, and Bobby De Cordova-Reid from Fulham.

While Iheanacho’s departure may not necessarily affect the team with Patson Daka, Tom Cannon, and Jamie Vardy still much active, the departure of Dewsbury-Hall will leave a hole in the midfield, and speculation already has it that new manager Steve Cooper is in contact with lots of players to get the work done.

Cooper gave a considerable overview of the Premier League and the preparation in place for the Foxes in one of his recent interviews. In his words: “The step into the Premier League is a huge one. The guys who have been there before, including myself, we need to remind ourselves what’s coming. For the guys going up for the first time, we’re really trying to prepare them for how it feels.

“We’ll be working hard on the pitch. We’ll be working hard off the pitch to try to bring players in. Hopefully we’ll continue to improve and progress and be ready for that first game.”

Despite being seen as the favorite to get relegated, Leicester City are the best team to have gotten a promotion, finishing the 2023/2024 EFL Championship season with 97 points. With their experience in top-flight football, they should be able to keep their place in the English Premier League ahead of the 2025/2026 season. Leicester City could have been considered the favorite to get relegated due to their case with the FA. They are facing charges for breaching PSR rules in their last Premier League spell. If they lose this case, they will likely face up to 15 points deduction. But if they win this case, I don’t see any reason why they won’t keep their place.

Ipswich Town: The Tractor Boys aren’t Ready for the Big Boys

Kieran McKenna

McKenna, who won the Manager of the Year award in the Championship, has had a taste of the Premier League as an assistant coach at Old Trafford between 2018–2021. He left Machester United for Ipswich Town in 2021 and moved them from League One to the Championship 18 months later. Here we are today; McKenna is back in the Premier League. He secured back-to-back EFL promotions to take Ipswich into the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. The manager penned a new four-year deal in May.

After an impressive season in the Championship last season, Ipswich Town will be one of the memorable and tough underdogs in the Premier League this season. Like Luton Town, they will come out against the big boys in full flesh, but I doubt they can retain their place after the season. Despite signing Omari Hutchinson from Chelsea, Ipswich Town still don’t have enough talent to compete in the top flight. They have also signed Jacob Greaves from Hull City, Liam Delap from Man City U21, Arijanet Muric from Burnley, Conor Townsend from West Brom, and Ben Johnson from West Ham.

Southampton: Can Russell Martin Face the Premier League Heat?

Russell Martin

Southampton finished 4th in the Championship last season and booked a place in the Premier League after winning the playoff phase. Just after their promotion, Russell Martin signed a three-year contract extension as the team’s manager.

The Saints were active in the transfer market. They have signed Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Flynn Downes, Ben Brereton Díaz, Yukinari Sugawara, Nathan Wood, Ronnie Edwards, Welington, Charlie Taylor, Adam Lallana, Juan, Rento Takaoka, and Kuryu Matsuki. Carlos Alcaraz and Paul Onuachu have both returned from loan.

Despite getting promoted with his side, Russell Martin has not justified why he deserves to play in the Premier League. In one interview after his appointment, he said that Southampton believed in him despite not having anything to show.

We had to do this [get promoted] to justify their decision [to appoint him], to validate it. So I'm so pleased for them because I was not an exciting appointment. I finished 10th at Swansea with a real clear way of doing things, [same] at MK Dons, so for them to take me on was really brave.

Conclusion: Everton or Nottingham Forest to Battle for the Last Slot in the Premier League

Everton and Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest were almost relegated last season despite their star-struck team. They finished the season with 32 points—the lowest point of any surviving team in the Premier League history. On the other hand, Everton are yet to sort out their ownership issue. Fans are still unaware of who will take charge of the club next season as talks continue between the current and potential owners. This issue is undoubtedly enough to distract their season performance, and I believe one of these sides will join Ipswich Town and Southampton in the 2025/2026 Championship season.
