The 26-year-old fencer from Cairo, Egypt, upset Elizabeth Tartakovsky of the United States, a former NCAA champion, before she eventually lost to Jeon Hayoung of South Korea. Hafez took to her social media on Instagram, where she revealed that she was actually seven months pregnant during her performance in the ongoing Olympic Games that are being held in Paris.

“What appears to you as two players on the podium, they were actually three! It was me, my competitor, & my yet-to-come to our world, little baby! “My baby & I had our fair share of challenges, be it both physical & emotional. The rollercoaster of pregnancy is tough on its own, but having to fight to keep the balance of life & sports was nothing short of strenuous, however worth it. “I’m writing this post to say that pride fills my being for securing my place in the round of 16!”

She ended her caption with an encouraging line and said

"This specific Olympics was different; Three times *Olympian* but this time carrying a little Olympian one! ❤️"

Hafez, a three-time Olympian, achieved her best Olympic result by finishing 16th in Monday’s competition and has won gold medals in the individual and team saber events at the 2019 African Games.
