The match has spanned two days due to weather conditions. Alcaraz won the first set 6-4 but was down 3-1 in the tiebreak when rain interrupted play. The world No. 3 and former US Open champion was beaten 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 by the French No. 46.

The 21-year-old tennis star usually professionally carries himself, keeping his cool in tense match situations. However, that changed when Alcaraz grew frustrated in his second-round matchup of the Cincinnati Open on Friday, smashing his racket repeatedly into the court.

“I felt like it was the worst match that I’ve ever played on my career."  “I’ve been practicing really well. I was feeling great. But I couldn’t play. I want to forget it and try to move on to New York.”

Alcaraz said.

Monfils will compete in Friday's night session against Holger Rune for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open.
