According to a German report, the 27-year-old footballer will be able to work digitally for the South Korean army because he has already completed most of his obligatory military service, which only lasts 450 hours instead of 18 months, as he is a top athlete.

Kim has already completed the majority of his shortened military duty, totaling 540 hours instead of the standard 18 months, before his €50 million move from Napoli in 2023 to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023. During that time, he served three weeks in South Korea, participating in all mandatory programs, including night patrols.

After completing the initial training, Kim has 100 hours of service left to fulfill. With a special arrangement, he is permitted to complete this service online from Munich, participating in video conferences with children and teenagers in his home country. Each week, the footballer dedicates 1 to 2 hours to communicating with the youth and sharing important life values, including discipline, which has helped him achieve success in his sport.

Kim is considered one of the best defenders in the world. He made his first game of the 2024–25 Bundesliga season under new coach Vincent Kompany but made an error leading to one of Wolfsburg's goals, leading to reports that the Bayern management remained unhappy with his performances.
