The eight groups of the World Cup consisted of four countries from different continents except for Groups B, D, E, F, and G which had two European teams due to the number of slots allocated to the continent. In Group A, Netherlands and Senegal secured their place at the expense of host nations Qatar and Ecuador. Group B was dominated by England and USA while Argentina and Poland booked their spot on the last day for Group C. In Group D, Didier Deschamps's French team was accompanied by second-placed Australia, while Japan surprisingly clinched the top spot along with Spain who had to settle for second place in Group E. Morocco and Croatia replicated Brazil and Switzerland's feet to progress from Group F and Group G respectively. South Korea left it late against an already qualified Portuguese side to secure a second-place spot, leaving Uruguay's win against Ghana to amount to nothing.
